A Longer Route Taken
This Year’s Kentucky
Backroads Driving Tour
To add a little spice to this perennially popular start to OVR’s Touring Season, Tour Leaders Steve Krekeler and Phil Dougherty lengthened this looped route so it now totals 130 miles. With its starting and finishing lines in Wilder, KY; drivers and navigators of 39 Porsches were treated to a curvaceous collection of hill-hopping sprints all morning long. If you like twisty stretches of riding hilltop ridges punctuated by challenging elevation changes, this tour is for you.
After drivers and navigators received a safety lecture and loaded route details via Google Maps, the cars departed at 8:30 AM, tightly synchronized into three groups to begin cruising the Bluegrass State as the light fog lifted. Exhilarated by the cool weather and smooth country roads, drivers and navigators were rewarded with a few fleeting glimpses of the Ohio and Licking Rivers. After being treated to a couple of quick pit stops at Kincaid Lake State Park and the Bracken County Public Library in Brooksville, KY; the groups headed back to the finish line at Wilder’s own “Longnecks” for refreshments and the table side swapping of tour tales.
Thanks again to Phil, Gwynne, and Steve for all their mapping and planning efforts. It was the perfect route to kick off OVR’s trio of twisty tours this year.
