 Fine Wine & Fabulous Cars

The 2012 OVR Annual Charity Wine Tasting and Auction March 31th , 7:00 PM at Zakira's Garage

It will be hard to top last year's wine tasting event held among a great collection of cars, however we are working hard to.  If you were there you will most certainly remember what a great night it was.  If you weren't, you will want to make sure you attend the next time we host the wine tasting event at Tom Stegman's garage!  Jerry Wolf went out in a blaze of glory with that event and set the bar high for me.  I have been appointed Winemeister this year and am honored to host another fabulous OVR charity wine tasting.  In keeping with the garage theme, this year we will be at Zakira's Garage, 6219 Wooster Pike, Cincinnati, Ohio 45227.  Zakira's restores, races and maintains vintage automobiles.  It is a fabulous setting with a rich history and perfect for experiencing wine that has aged gracefully.

Once again, we will be selecting and tasting some outstanding wines and will have several items up for auction.  Attendance is limited so be sure and register in advance on CLUBREGISTRATION.NET.

See you on March 31st for a fun filled evening with some outstanding cars and many fine wines!

Your new Winemeister,  Grant Karnes

Howard Rapp Award Winner - 2011
Tom Griffith's 1965 Porsche 356 CoupeEach year the Howard Rapp Award is presented to the OVR member whose devotion to his car and the sport of ‘concours’ best typifies the spirit of the award’s namesake Howard Rapp. Traditionally, we use the car deemed “Best of Show” at the VW-Porsche Reunion to select our winner. I am pleased to announce that this year’s winner is Tom Griffiths and his beautiful ’65 356 C Coupe. Tom’s car stood out in a rather crowded field of nice cars at this year’s reunion. And Tom’s attitude toward the care and feeding of his ride was immediately apparent to those listening to his story.

Tom purchased the Coupe seven years ago in September, 2004. He bought it from a dealer in Costa Mesa, California and had it shipped back to Cincinnati. It was basically a “driver” when he bought it. Tom reports that the car was in decent shape, but in need of some care. Shortly after buying the car Tom was introduced to Dick Weiss. Over the years, Tom credits Dick with helping him to bring the car up from a “driver” to a “really nice driver”. The biggest improvement being an engine rebuild. The engine rebuild was required after the crank-shaft broke coming back from Colorado in 2006. The next big project was a new paint job in 2010. This was done by Bob Bennett in Eaton, Ohio. Bob took the car down to bare metal, corrected some questionable previous body work and repainted it. There were also some electrical issues this past year, but those are resolved now and Tom is enjoying the car every chance he gets!

The Rapp Award was presented to Tom at our annual Chili Party at Porsche of Kings Automall on January 21st, 2012.

Congratulations Tom!
